At home with the Veeder's

“Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.”
--William Martin

These in home sessions are at the core of why I love photography.  It's not just about pretty pictures with perfect lighting and smiling faces (although don't get me wrong-that's good too!!!).  As humans we need to know we are not alone.  We need to know that there is someone else out there, experiencing what we are experiencing.
To allow a photographer into your home means surrendering to vulnerability.  But in vulnerability comes great reward.  It creates an avenue in which we connect over our shared human experience.   Tender, unscripted, and intimate moments are what drew me to photography.
No matter what your family looks like, your house looks like, or your faith looks like, we can all find comfort in our shared understanding of humanity.

At home with 2 adorable kiddo's.

Another in-home session with two adorable tots.
....For so many reasons I love in-home sessions.  The ability to artfully document fleeting moments of your children, moments that will soon be nothing more than "Remember When's?" is so priceless.

It's inevitable to be caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, especially as a parent of young children.  The work is never ceasing.  Feeding babies, macaroni art with toddlers, wiping noses, matching up socks, tucking in to bed, going back in for another sip of water.....and the list goes on and on.

I love true lifestyle photography and being able to document little moments that you yourself might not even have been able to catch.  Freezing ever racing time is the mission for these sessions.  Documenting real life, in real time.

Estella turns One

One year ago I had the honor of documenting this little girls beautiful entrance into the world.  1 year later,  I was able to photograph her 1st birthday.

That first year....a roller coaster.  So full of high's and low's.  Sleepless nights.  Spit up everywhere.

Confusion.  Joy.  Euphoria.

I like to think that a child's first birthday is just as much about the parents and the child.  A celebration of change & love.

Happy Birthday Estella Love.  May your 2nd year old life be filled with many blessings.

The Birth of Eli Dale

<>The Birth of Eli Dale<>

This "birth" shoot was a little bit different.  Eli was born via Cesarean section early Monday morning, and I was there to document those first few precious hours after his delivery.

Eli weighed in at 5lbs, 15oz-quite a difference from his older brother who was almost 9 lbs!  I just love all the surprises that come with new life.

The hospital staff was kind enough to let me in the nursery to photograph his first bath and his measurements.  It was a joy to watch his parents beam over his every little detail.

Also, can I just mention what a trooper mom is?  Not only did she deliver, for the 2nd time, via c-section-but she also has a broken leg.  A BROKEN LEG.  If you think of it, say a little prayer and send her some good thoughts as she recovers!

Congratulations Lee, Karen, & Caleb on the birth of baby brother!

Camden | Newborn

 <>Camden William Hougas<>

My time with Camden reminded me of all the reasons why I love to document newborns exactly as they are.

The love that each family member has for this new little life is so abundant & evident.  I loved to watch his older sister & brother kiss his little cheeks & admire those teeny tiny fingers.  Ben & Katie were both beaming with pride for Camden, and as someone who has known this family for many, many (many) years, I can truly say that it feels as if he has always been here.  He just fits.

Welcome to the world little bud.

The Birth of Camden

.the birth of camden.

It must be something in the water, but every birth I've photographed lately has been crazy fast.  I was emailing with Katie the morning of her induction, and it sounded like there was a possibility she would be sent home.
About 40 minutes later, to everyone's surprise, Camden William Hougas was born-and he came in with a bang!
I was so thrilled that I arrived in time (barely!), although I might have broken a few laws getting there.

It was such a thrill to document Camden's birth.  Katie did Ahhhhh-mazing.  If you've had a quick labor then you know how intense it can be (or any type of labor for that matter!).  Cheers of encouragement rang through the room as Katie brought into this world brand new life, all 9lbs 11oz of it.  Camden is baby #3 for this couple, and it's pretty obvious how lucky he is.

Ben & Katie, it was such a privilege to photograph the birth of your son.  I hope these images become family heirlooms, so that you are able to always remember what those first precious moments as a family of 5 felt like.

Congratulations!

The Birth of Elle

.the birth of elle.

2:30pm- Very little progression, mom still had quite a ways to go.
4:49pm- Beautiful baby girl is here, and being cradled in the arms of her amazing mama.

Every birth is unique.  I could have never anticipated how quickly this one would have gone (for a first time mom, too!)  I raced to the hospital, ran up stairs and arrived within moments of this little girl making her entrance.  However, amiss the adrenaline and chaos, the one thing that did not surprise me is how well Hillary handled her fast labor with ease and an overwhelming sense of calm.   Anyone who knows this couple will confirm it:  They are meant to be parents.

I watched, observed, and snapped away as a family of two became a family of three.  Let me tell you what, it never gets old.  I am deeply grateful when parents welcome me into the sacred birthing space to document new life.

  Baby Elle is profoundly blessed.

Congratulations Matt & Hillary.  I'm so excited for you, and so lucky to call you friends.

Graham | Newborn

Sweet, sweet, Graham.

Pregnancy, labor, & delivery are great reminders that as much as we would like to, we just can't control everything in life.
The plan was for me to be able to photograph this little guy's first few magical breaths, but a bit of a curve ball was thrown when he decided to come 5 weeks early, via an emergency c-section.
His first couple weeks of life were spent in the NICU in Rochester, and I'm happy to report he is strong, healthy, and super duper cute.

I spent just a short amount of time with the Elmhorst Family, and as you can imagine, life with 3 kids, ages 2 and under is a bit crazy.  But crazy good.  His big sisters are pretty smitten, and it's fun to see them all interact with each other. I imagine how close they will be in the years to come and I can't help but marvel at how incredibly blessed they are.

I just love when families welcome me into their homes to photograph real life.
There is so much beauty in the mundane,
You just have to look.

Zach & Ellyse | Baby #3

Way back when it was still warm out I had the pleasure of photographing this growing family.  Addie was one of my very first newborn shoots, 2 years ago.  It's crazy to think that since then they have added 2 more kiddo's!
These guys are always a good time, and I can't wait to photograph the newest family member later this week!

Congratulations Elmhorst Family!

Hougas #3

I always feel to privileged to be able to document families as they grow.  The Hougas family is expecting their third (whew!  I'm tired just thinking about it!) little blessing very soon.  It's been pretty cool to watch them grow as a family of two to a family of 5 in the past several years.
These guys really know how to cut a rug.  They are always such troopers!  We had a quick in home session (because it's flipping cold out) to celebrate the highly anticipated arrival of the newest little family member.

Congratulations Hougas Family-I can't wait to meet your little dude!

Cheers!

Lucy turns one

That first year.  So intense.
No other life event could possibly pack so much joy, love, fear, frustration, confusion, and euphoria into 12 short months.

It has been such a delight to photograph Lucy through out this past year as I watched this family grow together.

It seems like just yesterday she was a helpless newborn.  Now she is an independent, feisty, hilarious, full of love and life toddler.  Running, laughing, jumping, and playing-there is nothing stopping this girl.

I love when I have friends and clients that are on board with letting their children and family be vulnerable for photos.  No posing, no directing, no saying "cheese".  Documenting real life, in real time.  Cherishing memories that would have otherwise been easily forgotten.  That's the business I want to be in.

Happy 1st Birthday Lucy-you're goin' places.
